Day 2 Hanoi to Hue

March 11st, 2008
Distance travelled today: 0 km
Current Mood: :D

We started off the day incredibly early with a 4am departure for the airport. Twenty six bleary eyed unicyclists and their crew packed into the bus which took us to the airport for a 6am flight down to the town of Hue, our official cycle start point.

Despite the early start, we are starving by the time we got to our hotel, and demolished a delicious breakfast which was awaiting us when we arrived. Our rooms were still being cleaned, so we assembled our unicycles in the hotel lobby, taking up every inch of space available to us.

It was very humid and drizzling when we arrived, but cleared just in time for us to set off to the Forbidden City. We toured around the incredible old buildings of the fortified city, with our Vietnamese guide explaining to us about the historical significance.

After exploring the Forbidden City, we ride a short distance to the Emperors Tomb. Our local guide tells us of how various emperors and the concubines they kept in the compound.

Riding through the busy roads with hundreds of other motorists going in seemingly every direction was a challenge. It seemed that crazy traffic is not restricted to Hanoi!

For the locals though, 26 Unicyclists riding down the busy streets of Hue is definitely not something you see everyday. We had many stares, and beeps from passing motorists, kids chasing after us, and everybody wanting to have a go on our unicycles each time we stopped. We were the cause of many traffic holdups as the motorists slowed down to get a better look.

We were exhausted by the time we rode back to the hotel and then heading out for a delicious 10 course meal.

Quotes of the day

""Of all the tours I've done, you unicyclists have the largest number of GPS units per head than anyone else. Face it guys...you're all geeks!" Jason Williams our tour leader"

I like the first picture of you all mixing with the locals at rush hour. You don't exactly blend in. :>

Hi Dal,
Good to see the photos, and everyone seems to be surviving. I expect you will enjoy a couple of cool ones at the end of the day. Keep dodging all the Nam traffic and look forward to your return
