Day 5 Hoi An: Rest Day

March 14th, 2008
Distance travelled today: 0 km
Current Mood: :0

We were finally able to sleep in somewhat on the first rest day of the tour. After breakfast we went our separate ways to explore Hoi An. The town is famous for its' tailors and many riders took the opportunity to get fitted for suits, tuxedos and dresses. The local dressmakers were able to produce these items ready for us to pickup later that day, with very good results for a fraction of what we would pay back home.

About half the group joined a Vietnamese cooking class, which involved a tour of the markets where our tutor explained to us all the different types of produce used in Vietnamese cooking. We were then taken up the river in a boat to attend the cooking class at the Red Bridge Cooking School. After a quick tour of the herb garden we began our cooking lesson. Our chef taught us how to make delicious Vietnamese spring rolls, Asian eggplant in a claypot, Hoi An pancakes, and gave us a lesson on making flowers out of vegetables. Unfortunately, some of our attempts were not as presentable as we would have liked (see photos).

Quotes of the day

"'you normally eat with your fingers, but I think you need a spoon'.....Chef to Nick regarding his Spring Roll attempt"
