Day 6 Hoi An to Quang Nhai
We set off
from Hoi An through the busy traffic again, to the local port where we loaded
our unicycles onto the boats. There
were plenty of fishermen out on their boats today. We spent 45min cruising up the Thu Bon River to the start of our
ride.
After
unloading the ferry we rode off the jetti and quickly found ourselves on quiet
road following the beautiful coastline.
The ride was fairly flat, with many sandy unsealed roads that were great
fun to ride on. However the soft sand
resulted in many UPD’s (unplanned dismounts- there is no such thing as falling
off a unicycle), and skinned elbows and knees.
It was a very hot day and many of us were beginning to get sunburnt
despite liberal amounts of sunscreen.
The riders
were greeted by hundreds of kids along the route with the usual cries of:
“Hallo Hallo”
“What is
your name”
“Are you
married?”
etc etc
Again, we
were swamped by kids every place we stopped.
Some of our riders show off their unicycling skills much to the delight
of the kids.
The ride
was, as usual, split into short sections between rest stops. However, one section was longer than
expected, with the 11km stretch turning out to actually be 22km before arriving
at our lunch spot on the beach. Some of
the riders jump in the sea to cool off.
Lunch was a
DIY affair, with the riders making their own filled rolls and feasting on the
beach. We then rode a further few more
km’s before getting on our truck to take us to Quang Nhai, our final
destination for the day.
After an
hours drive we stopped by the memorial for the My Lai massacre. It was a fitting time to arrive as the 40th
anniversary is tomorrow. There were
shocking depictions in the museum of the atrocities that happened that day.
By the time we arrived at our hotel we were exhausted but unfortunately the hotel was full and we ended up being transferred to another one. A quick meal and then it was off to bed!
